Corrections in Snow License Manager 8.3.10:

  • Amazon Linux servers are now correctly marked as servers. (PRB0042383).
  • The 'Help' section links in both 'Snow License Manager' and 'Snow Management and Configuration Center' have been updated to point to the correct versions of the products. (PRB0042244).
  • The column "Databases" has been changed to "Instances" in the Oracle Overview page. (PRB0041899, PRB0042345).
  • The columns "Created" and "IP address" are now included in the scheduled export of the "Computers that are not inventoried" report. (PRB0041194)
  • The graphs in the O365 overview page have been improved, to better visualize the data for user activity counts. (PRB0041851).
  • Improved logic of the groups-part of the software recognition step, in the data update job, lowering the overall execution time. (PRB0042327).
  • The API will no longer show an exception page when trying to list applications in scenarios where blacklisted applications criteria overlap. (PRB0042409).
  • It's no longer possible to add new rules to a globally generated application (PRB0042368).
  • The Software Update step in the Data Update Job has been optimized to help prevent performance issues that arise in platforms with large amounts of data. (PRB0042448).
  • The "Computers per type" widget, on the Computers overview page, has been corrected, resulting in the "Virtual Servers" and "Virtual machines" computer types now displaying their respective associated data. (PRB0042431).

Do not make the mistake of assuming that everything in SAM happens in SLM - it happens in the IT estate, and you need to plug it into that accordingly to ensure you can demonstrate and effective ROI in SLM.

This version of Snow Management and Configuration Center (SMACC) introduces support for Admin Console plugin for Snow Inventory Server 6.0.7 and the latest Snow License Manager plugin.

As you may know, in our Knowledge Base we collect all the most up to date documents and guides about our software. You can filter the data by topic or by category and even order for the "last update" field, but why not having here a quick list of the most up to date documents about SLM 9.0.x? 


So, here they are:


      (applies to Snow ' Optimizer for SAP® Software version 2.1) 
      This document describes the steps of the process to transfer information from Snow Optimizer for SAP Software       to Snow License Manager. The process involves exporting data from Snow Optimizer for SAP Software before it       can be imported to Snow License Manager. For ad-hoc use, the process can be completed manually, for more       regular data updates, the process can be automated by scheduling exports and imports.

In Snow Management And Configuration Console (SMACC) there's a specific section dedicated to the yet unrecognized software. If you have that software installed on one or more computers in your company, you can help us to add the full definition to the list. To do so, it's quite easy and some steps can really help you to provide us complete and relevant data.

  1. Download the SRS Request Template from this link: SRS Template v4.2 
  2. Fill all the mandatory columns with a special attention to:
    • Official Product Name*
    • Official Manufacturer*
    • Official Version*
    • Full Installation Path Including Main Executable*
  3. Save the file in XLS format and send it to our Support Team

What if you miss some of this information? 
To provide the best definitions, that can be valid for each of our customers, we need to be sure that all the necessary data is included in the most precise way. There's a simple trick to collect this data directly from your SMACC with a report. 
Note: Please be sure to have ready the name of the computer/s that have that application already installed and that a Snow agent has already performed an inventory scan.

These steps will help you to collect the missing fields:

  1. Open SMACC and select "Inventory Admin Console"
  2. Open "Devices"
  3. Click on the "Add View" field (available at the top, which is used to create the report)
  4. Name the report as you prefer
  5. In the next step, select the required fields:
    • Device \ Computer name
    • Software \ Software name
    • Software \ SW Manufacturer
    • Software \ Software version
    • Software \ SW path name
  6. Next, filter the report for the computer you are looking for with the installed application
    • Select the Device \ Computer name field
    • Specify "EQUALS" as the condition
    • And specify the name of the computer
  7. Click "Save" so that the report view is created and is now available in SMACC


Once you run this report on the relevant computer, you'll be able to find all the necessary fields that were required in the SRS Request Template. A copy/paste will be enough to fill all the columns and then proceed to the submission to our Support team.

Every License Management Tool is only as good as its software recognition. Once subscribed to our Software Recognition Service, you will receive a daily updated version of our huge database. The updates are transferred to your customer environment through Snow Update Service and applied to the SnowLicenseManager database on the SQL server. But how does this recognition database grow over time?


The Team

Snow has a special team that is constantly working on the recognition database to grow.


Manual Enrichment through import template

Customers can enter software recognition patterns to the global Software Recognition database manually through an import template. These patterns will be entered to the global Software Recognition database and published through Snow Update Service to every other customer worldwide.

Please submit the import template through Snow Support.

There are overall three different forms to submit data to the SRS database.


Local Rules in SMACC

Customers can design custom recognition rules using Snow Management and Configuration Center (SMACC). These rules are unique per customer and will not be transferred. This is a reasonable approach for inhouse development where no other customer benefits from the recognition rule.


Automated Enrichment through SUS

Customers send in their unrecognized applications automatically through Snow Update Service (SUS). This information is collected and manually reviewed by Snow. It is then added to the Software Recognition database and all customer environments are updated.


Sounds interesting right? But what about data protection and personally identifiable information?

The customer’s Snow platform will upload metadata for any software inventory data that is not yet recognized.

Software inventory data includes:

  • Software file inventory
  • “Add / Remove programs” , “Programs and Features” (Windows)
  • Package Manager entries (Unix / Linux)
  • Installed apps (Mobile platforms)
  • Operating system (Name, Manufacturer, Version)


The following metadata is uploaded to the Software Recognition Service for all software inventory data that is not yet recognized:

  • Name (File Description)
  • Manufacturer
  • Version
  • Language
  • OS Type
  • Path and File Name
  • Indication if the entry is a file or a registry / package manager entry
  • Collapsed user catalogue

The data uploaded to the Software Recognition Service only contains software inventory data (as detailed above). No information related to the computer assets where the software inventory data was found is uploaded (e.g no hostnames, IP addresses).

When data is transmitted personal user details are collapsed when it reports to Software Recognition Service. From a global perspective it is received as “C:\Users\{user}\...”for integrity reasons. However, locally in your environment the data will still present itself with the corresponding user.

The data is encrypted, compressed and sent over a HTTPS connection initiated from the customer platform. By default (configurable) this is initiated daily at 7PM. The customer platform will initiate a connection to


It is possible to deactivate the functionality of customer recognition patterns being uploaded to the Software Recognition Service. This will turn the Software Recognition Service to the 'Read Only' mode.

  1. Go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Snow Software\Snow Update Service' on the License Manager server.
  2. Add a string value called 'SRSReadOnly' and set it to either 'true' or 'True'. Any other value will default this setting to false and continue to upload SRS data.
