Is it time to upgrade your Snow software?

Snow brings to market at least two significant new feature/functionality software releases every year, as well as a few maintenance software releases. Included in your license fee is access to all these new capabilities and fixes.

Snow has a number of Software products, our core product family includes Snow License Manager (SLM) and Snow Inventory (INV). Latest releases are SLM9.4.1 and SI6.3.0. What versions are you using? Follow these steps below to find out what version you are using: 



On the Home page click on your Username at the top right and select About and you’ll see the Software Release details. Many of you may already benefit from the SLM9/INV6 releases, which provides access to recent capabilities such as: Network Discovery; SaaS Cloud Application Metering; Oracle Compliance; Middleware Scanning; Compliance Exclusions; Microsoft Windows Server License Optimization and Assessment Reporting; numerous Reporting enhancements; many additional Connectors, e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud; 24/7 availability as the Data Update Job does not lock the system, and so on. If you take a hosted Snow solution from a Snow Partner it is likely you are leveraging recent Snow technology. This is one of the benefits of this delivery model. However, some of you remain live on SLM8.x/INV5.x releases. This iteration of Snow’s technology came to market 3 years ago. Others remain live on SLM7.x/INV3.x releases. This iteration of Snow’s technology is now more than 5 years old.  These older software releases do not include the recent features mentioned above. Peripheral technologies in your own estates will also have moved on in many ways over recent years, raising the prospect of increased interoperability issues. SLM7 and INV3 reached “End of Support” on 30/06/19, meaning these releases were sunsetted from the supported product portfolio. New requests for product Support are no longer accepted by Snow Customer Support. Snow is keen that SLM7, SLM8, INV3 and INV5 customers upgrade so that you can experience the benefits of the more recent capabilities we offer in support of the positive business outcomes you seek. Implementation of said newer software releases can be performed by:

  • Snow Professional Services for a fee, to include a pre-upgrade assessment
  • One of Snow’s Partners, if you are served by that skilled community
  • Potentially by yourselves, dependent on the complexity of the specific upgrade and your own environment as well as your own skill levels.

In fact, many capabilities can be upgraded with a high degree of automation via the Snow Upgrade Service (SUS), although you need to be comfortable with that model to enable it. There are also disk space considerations and, if you have any implemented customizations, these need to be assessed before the upgrade takes place. Snow’s clear recommendation is that you take expert advice before proceeding so that the best upgrade path can be plotted.
