I'm new to snow and have been looking for a way to find the computers on out network with low disc space and/or small hard discs. Would someone point me in the right direction please?
OK, a little more complex as I've worked out how to do this; I want a list of computers with low hd space and a particular application or a particular name prefix or suffix. The reason is we have a subest of PC's on our nw and I want to list any of this subset that have low disc space. I should be able to identify them by a number of variables such as part of the model name, part of the computer name, or a specific piece of software installed... thx
The hardware report would be straight forward, just using the out of the box "All Computers" report would give you what you need. Using the column selector to add in the relevant fields, for example System disk (GB) and System disk available (GB), you can then add criteria to match part of the model name or part of the computer name, however it would not identify computers running a specific piece of software.
The report that would identify computers running a specific piece of software (Applications per computer) does not expose the disk space data.
You would need a "custom" report to join the two sets of data together to give you what you need.
this is standard functionality in Snow and part of the standard alerting. on your default Snowboard and in your default alert list you will find alert for both computers running low on disk-space and computers where installed disk-space is lower than x MB. The alerts are also interactive and by clicking on them you drill down into the detail to show you the actual hostnames in question.
you can manage and configure the thresholds for these alerts in the Snow Management and Configuration Console under alert management. (if you are on a hosted platform you will have to request the changes via your hosting partner.)
Mark is correct, it is also possible to run this as a report. the advantage of a report is you can also schedule this to run on a regular interval and get it to send to your inbox.
Further to Jelle's brilliant response, you can also create a quick report for Hardware with low Disk Space under the standard 'Computer Hardware Information' report.
'Add Group' > 'System Diskspace' and then set the criteria to however you wish. We're testing this at the moment so each site gets a weekly report of machines with low-disk space for them to investigate.
Same with memory to be honest! Really useful report. Good luck!
The alert feature is really great, especially to see it on the dashboard.
However, we noticed that the alert for computers with low disk spaces includes many VMware ESXi machines.
Probably this is because I cannot see any disk data being collected by the data collector for vSphere.
Do you know if/how it's possible to exclude VMware ESXi hosts from the alert?
Many Thanks in advance,
Hi Sven, at this point in time it is not possible to add additional filters to existing alerts however you can do this via the report route. by adding in an exclusion for ESXi computers.
Many thanks for the quick response.
