Has anyone been able to take Snow's OSW report and translate to a effective license position report? How have you been doing it outside of Snow?
the OSW will show the inventory and usage data for all your Oracle database products. You should add the column "Core factor" to the OSW report. Please also make sure that in case of VMs, every VM has a host computer and that the socket capacity is available for each physical computer.
To calculate your license requirement, you best export the OSW report. Depending on the metric you wish to cover a computer, the kind of partitioning method or maybe your customer specific use rights, you calculate your license requirement outside of SLM.
Finally, you check your use rights / orders against your calculated license requirement. If you already have all your Oracle database entitlements in SLM, you can again use the export functionality.
The best format for an ELP is a report. You start with listing your entitlement first and then you list your requirement. At the end you bring together requirement and entitlement in a final table that shows if your entitlement is sufficient, if you are short with database products licenses or even have too many licenses.
You might also have to consider "soft facts", since Oracle licensing could become complex and findings are sometimes not just black and white (Matching Service Level Policy, Customer Definition, VMware...). Most likely, one of our many Snow partners and SAM experts will be able to support.
